Dearest brothers and sister in Islam:
My talk with you this Friday is about one of the morals of the Prophet’s (PBUH) that he taught us, and this moral of the Prophet is in itself is a duty of the Muslim over his brother legislated by the Islamic law … we are going to explain it with its etiquette and virtues.
Imam Muslim narrated it, Imam Ahmad and others from Abu Huraira may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him said: the right of Muslim over his brother are six: What are they O Messenger of Allah? He said: greet him when you meet him, accept his invitation when he invites you, and if he asks for advice then advise him, and if he sneezes say to him blessed you if he gets sick then visit him, and if he died then follow his funeral.
To clarify that, these things are from the duties of a Muslim towards the rights of his brother, is to greet him and accept his invitation if invited for food or a fast and there was no objection from the attending and if you are asked for guidance or advice in matters of religion, this world then try your best to do that and say to him after he sneezes if he said Al-Hamdallah: God bless you, and visit him if gets sick and make it a short visit and reduce the questions as well follow his funeral if he died.
This has made the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him the greeting a way for the paradise (Jannah) and the way of love, as Abu Hurayrah narrated: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him said: Do not enter Paradise until you believe, do not believe until you love one another, Shall I guide you to something if you did, you love one another, Spread greeting among you» Narrated by Imam Muslim and Imam Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah
Scholars said greeting is the first cause of harmony and the key to bringing in affection and in its spreading enables Muslims intimacy for each other and shows their sign that distinguished them from other people and as a way of training self on humility and giving dignity to Muslims.
And our Prophet peace be upon him was teaching his companions about greeting Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him said: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him: «O My son, if you entered on your family then greet them, that would be a blessing to you and your household» Narrated by al-Tirmidhi
It turns out from this hadeeth; it is from the sunnah that a man greets his family when he enters into his house, and that greeting is a blessing for the people of that house.
And the greeting with its benefits, it costs nothing. Therefore the Messenger of Allah, peace is upon him said the most selfish person who doesn’t greet.
For this moral in the religion of Islam, there is some manners etiquette must be observed:
First .. that you greet with the greeting of Islam, (Assalam Alykum was rahmatu Alla was barakatuh), which was the greeting of the Messenger of Allah PBUH that he used to deliver to people when he passes them .. and that every word of this greeting has ten rewards. As it was reported that a man came to the Prophet PBUH and said: (السلام عليكم) peace be upon you, then the messenger replied, and he said (ten), and then another man came and said: (السلام عليكم ورحمة الله) peace and mercy of God on you, he replied, and then sat down, he said (twenty) and then another man came, he said: (السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته) peace, mercy and blessings of God on you, the prophet answered him and then sat down, he said (thirty).
Second: that you don’t limit your greeting to your friends only. Instead, you greet who know and who you don’t know. As it was reported that Abdullah bin Amr that a man asked the Prophet, peace be upon him Islam (which deed) is better said ((feed the food and deliver the greeting to those you know and who do not want you know))
Third, the order of the greeting, as Abu Huraira narrated, the Prophet, peace be upon him said: «the young greets the old, and passing person greets the sitting person, and the few greets the many»
Fourth, you should reply with same greeting or better, (وَإِذَا حُيِّيتُم بِتَحِيَّةٍ فَحَيُّوا بِأَحْسَنَ مِنْهَا أَوْ رُدُّوهَا) which can be translated as (And when you are greeted with some words, greet back with words better than it or with the same)
Fifth.. Greet upon departure also as narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him said: «If one of you wants to leave a gathering, then he (she) should greet the people, if it seemed to him to sit, then let him sit down, and then if the wants to leave then he should greet, as the first one is not more important than the last one» which means he should deliver the greeting the same way when greeted the people when he came.
