“Ramadan” Friday Khutbah (June 2nd) by Br. Nayef Al-Malki

قال تعالى :{يا أيها الناس اتقوا ربكم الذي خلقكم من نفس واحدة وخلق منها زوجها وبث منهما رجالاً كثيراً ونساءً واتقوا الله الذي تسائلون به والأرحام إن الله كان عليكم رقيباً}

Brothers and sisters, Allah subhanah wataala has blessed us with blessed times in which the believers are waiting for, to take the advantages of them and do more good deeds, to get closer to Allah and to repent to him, to check their eeman and change their life to be more meaningful. And one of those blessed times is the month of Ramadan. The month that Allah says: {شهر رمضان الذي أنزل فيه القرآن هدى للناس وبينات من الهدى والفرقان }  Ramadan is the month in which was sent down the Quran as a guidance and judgment between right and wrong.

Ramadan is a month in which all the doors of hell are shut and chained and all the gates of Jannah are opened, all the shayateen are locked up and they are not allowed to go around whispering to you evil thoughts.

Ramadan is the month of fasting, the kind of worship that Allah has made a special gate in Jannah called Bab Arrayan, as narrated by Sahl ibn Sa’ad who reported that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: “There is a gate to Paradise that is called ar-Rayyan. On the Day of Resurrection, it will say: ‘Where are those who fasted?’ When the last [one] has passed through the gate, it will be locked.” [Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim]. May Allah makes us among them.

Ramadan is the month in which the messenger of Allah said: … whoever fasts during Ramadan, out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven.” , So fasting Ramadan forgives your sins. Fasting Ramadan causes you to enter Jannah. Fasting Ramadan brings you about a sense of taqwa and Imaan.

Ramadan is the month that has the best night in the year, Lalut alqader, the night that has a unique reward when you worship Allah at it. The reward will be multiplied as you worship Allah 1000 months As Allah said: ليلة القدر خير من ألف شهر

Ramadan is the month in which it is easier to get the reward of praying the whole night in a simple action, the words of the Prophet (SAW) is clear as he said: “Whoever prays with the imam until he finishes, Allaah will record for him as if he spent the whole night in prayer” were narrated by al-Tirmidhi (806) and classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.  This is a great bounty from Allah that you pray for one hour or so, and Allah will reward you for the whole night. You pray 11 Rakaat or so , and Allah will reward you for praying the whole night.

Brothers and sisters this is not every month, this is the month of Ramadan. The month of Ramadan is the holiest time of the year. We thank Allah that not all the timings of the year are the same rather Allah has preferred some timings over others. We thank Allaah that he gives us the chance to be alive during this month, the most preferred and the most blessed month. And when we remember our brothers and sisters who passed away before the month of Ramadan, this should encourage us to be good, makes us want to do extra good deeds in this month.  And realise my dear brothers and sisters that the month has been made so easy for you; every aspect has been facilitated for you. Jahannam is closed, Jannah is wide open. There are no devils, nobody can now come and say: Oh! shaitaan whispered into my ear. There are no shayateen whispering; if you do a bad deed in this month realise that 100% this deed is from you. Not that if you did it outside of Ramadan you can blame shaitaan. Shaitaan can only whisper but in Ramadan – he cannot even whisper in Ramadan. Even that is taken away from him. Any evil that you do in this month, it comes from your soul. So, Ramadan is a reflection of who you are. Ramadan is a chance to purify your soul and make it right.

Another great advantage that we can get in Ramadan is that, this month is a great opportunity to gain positive change in our life. It is the great time of the year that we do good deed for 30 days and keep doing the same thing after that. This good deed could be something you consider it a little, but when you continue doing it, it makes a lot of difference in your life. Example of this and you can consider any act of worship, one can reads the meaning of one Ayah everyday, at the end of the month he ends up with knowing the meaning of 30 Ayat, at the end of the year, he ends up with 365 Ayat ! for this, the messenger of Allah said : “Take up good deeds only as much as you are able, for the best deeds are those done regularly even if they are few.”

Another great lesson that we can get in the month of Ramadan is that, it is the month of the great battles in the beginning of Islam. and one of the most important battle is the battle of Badr, the one that Allah describes in the Quran the day of Forgan, The day of testing. This battle and many other battles took place during Ramadan. So, Ramadan is not an excuse for laziness, it is not an excuse not to work. Rather, one should work hard and focus more his deen, because it is a time for improving ourselves, improving our mind and body and spirit. We must welcome Ramadan like a long-lost friend.

One day when the messenger of Allah was giving the Friday khutbah, he climbed up his mimbar, he climbed up the pulpit – and his pulpit had 3 steps to it. And so, he climbed up the first pulpit and he said out loud Ameen. Then he climbed up the second and he said Ameen. Then he climbed up the third and he said Ameen. So, the companions were confused and they said: “Oh!  Messenger of Allah we have never seen you say Ameen every time you climb the pulpit; this is the first time we have heard you say Ameen. What was the reason for this?” The Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “When I was climbing up the pulpit, Jibreel (AS) came to me and told me: O Muhammad (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam)! Anyone in your nation who manages to be alive when Ramadan comes & yet cannot get his sins forgiven, then may he perish in the fire of Hell. Say Ameen.” So, the Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said Ameen. Then he climbed the second step, Jibreel (AS) said: “O Muhammad (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam)! Anyone who manages to catch Laylatul Qadr & he does not manage to get his sins forgiven, may he perish in the fire of hell. Say ameen.” So the Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said ameen.  And then he climbed the third one and Jibreel (AS) said: “O Muhammad (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam)! Anyone of your ummah who manages to catch his parents one of them or both when they are elderly and they need his help and he is not able to service them properly and get his sins forgiven then may he perish. Say ameen.” And so, he (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said ameen.

Brothers and sisters fair Allah and do extra righteous deed in this live, and remember those people , our brothers and sisters who are in their graves now, who fasted among us previously , and now they are in their graves under the mercy of Allaah where there is no chance to get back to life and preform extra good deeds.

May Allah spread His richest blessings on us, and on all those who fast during Ramadhan, purely out of love for Him. May He help us to purify ourselves, by forgiving our sins .

O Allah, help us to purify ourselves in body, mind, heart and spirit. Help us to seek and find your good pleasure, and O Allah, remember us in the company of your beloved slaves.

اغفر للمسلمين والمسلمات  ….
